The piano is an acoustic, stringed instrument invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori. The strings are 'struck' by hammers, which is caused by pressing a key on the piano. The keyboard is the literal board of black and white keys on the piano, which has the same function as the guitarist's fretboard; it enables you to play different notes. By pressing a key, a pitch is heard.

Pianos are often used in jazz or classical performances, and have a wide range with many octaves. It is a chordophone and is made out of wood with metal strings. Pianos also have pedals, located at the bottom of the piano, for different tones and are used with the feet.

There are several types of pianos, the most well-known being the Grand piano. Other types include the upright piano, electric piano, and digital piano. The latter two are more commonly used in pop or rock bands, and around the home for practice.

There are also instruments which are variations of the piano, involving the use of the keyboard. These include piano-accordions and pipe organs. The piano uses both the treble clef and the bass clef. The treble clef shows what the right hand plays, and bass clef shows what the left hand plays. Below is an example of how the stave looks like for a piano.
